FAQ

A-Level Economics tutoring — common questions

How mathematical is A-Level Economics?

A-Level Economics involves more quantitative work than IGCSE — including index numbers, calculating elasticities, multiplier effects, and interpreting statistical data. However, it is not as mathematically demanding as Maths or Physics. Strong analytical writing and diagram accuracy matter more than calculation skill at A-Level Economics.

What is the difference between A-Level Economics and IB Economics?

A-Level Economics (CIE or Edexcel) tends to be more content-heavy with a strong emphasis on essay writing and data response. IB Economics SL/HL adds a development economics section and three Internal Assessment commentaries. For UK university applications A-Level is standard; for IB Diploma students, IB Economics is the natural choice. Our tutors cover both.

What A-Level Economics topics do students struggle with most?

Students most commonly struggle with the AD/AS model (distinguishing SRAS, LRAS, and Keynesian vs monetarist views), monopsony labour markets, and balance of payments analysis. These are also the topics most likely to appear in 25-mark essay questions. Our tutors address them with structured frameworks and past paper practice.

Is A-Level Economics a useful qualification for studying PPE or law?

Very much so. A-Level Economics is highly valued for PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford and other top universities, as well as for Law, International Relations, and Social Sciences. It demonstrates quantitative literacy, analytical reasoning, and the ability to construct evidence-based arguments — all core skills for these degrees.

How much coursework does A-Level Economics have?

CIE A-Level Economics has no coursework — it is entirely exam-assessed across Papers 1–4. Edexcel A-Level Economics similarly has no coursework component. All marks come from written exams, which means thorough exam technique training is essential. Our tutors focus heavily on timed essay and data response practice.
