What is the difference between IB French B and IB French A?
IB French B is a language acquisition course for students who have studied French but are not native speakers — it focuses on communication across thematic content at SL or HL. IB French A (Language & Literature or Literature) is for native or near-native French speakers — it involves literary analysis and the Individual Oral at a sophisticated level. Our tutors cover both.
How is the IB French Individual Oral assessed?
The IB French IO is a 10-minute oral examination in which students discuss a global issue through a French-language stimulus image or text, followed by a 5-minute discussion with the examiner. It is assessed on language (10 marks), message (10 marks), and interactive skills (10 marks) for Language B. Our tutors run full mock IOs with criterion-specific feedback.
My child has been doing French for 6 years — is IB French B HL appropriate?
Yes — students with 5–7 years of French and a good IGCSE French grade (7+) are typically well-suited for IB French B HL. HL demands a wider vocabulary range, more sophisticated writing, and stronger listening comprehension than SL. Our tutors assess the appropriate level at the first session and prepare a targeted plan.
Can a student with no French experience take IB French B?
Not realistically — IB French B SL assumes approximately 2–3 years of prior French study at minimum. Students who are complete beginners in Year 10 would struggle significantly with the IB French B SL demands. IB French ab initio (for true beginners) is the appropriate starting point. Our tutors advise honestly on candidacy.
Is IB French a useful qualification for French university applications?
IB French A (Language & Literature or Literature) at grade 6–7 demonstrates near-native French proficiency and is valued by French universities and grandes écoles. IB French B HL at grade 7 similarly demonstrates strong communicative competence. Combined with other IB subjects, it supports applications to French institutions and Francophone programmes globally.
